"Coach"

age 84 of Monroeville ,October 2, 2015. Son of the late Stephen and Catherine Statnick, beloved husband of  the late Patricia (Mapstone); loving friend and partner of Roselyn Schmidt; dear father of Kim Castagnero (Mike), Michele Giorgione (Michael) and Stephen (Julianne); adored and supportive grandfather to Michael, Meghan, Matthew, Madison, Briana, Ryanne, Isabella and Stephen. Steve always displayed an enthusiastic love of the beach, sun, gardening, skiing and especially food. He was a great supporter of all his grandchildren in school and sports and always yelled the loudest from the stands at the field and court. Few people have inspired thousands of young men as Coach Steve Statnick did during his extraordinary teaching and coaching career. Born and raised in Johnstown, PA, Steve had a successful football career at Slippery Rock College and then proudly served for two years in the Army, 1953-1955. After an honorable discharge, Steve returned to Johnstown where he started his storied career at two local high schools. In 1963, Steve accepted the position as head of the physical education department at a newly built complex named South Junior High, part of the Gateway School District in Monroeville PA. This was the start of the Coach Statnick tradition and legacy. The iconic maroon, white, blue and gold trunks gym uniform and program was created, representing Steve's principles of life-time fitness and hard work to build confident students and leaders in our nation. Steve's coaching record of 69-15-1 at South included 7 undefeated seasons, 40 shutouts and from 1965-1973, a record of 43-2. during these impressive years, Steve also earned a masters degree from Penn State and in 1979 he joined the Gateway coaching staff. Beyond all of his achievements, Steve was most thankful for his cherished family and many, many friends and former students. Steve was also very grateful for his partner Roselyn Schmidt and dog Scrappy and for the love and care she and her children, Garret (April), Roselyn Hineck (Jason), and Bernadette Beers (Joe); and grandchildren Dylan, Rylee, Haley, Isabelle, Aubrey, Mackenzie, Gracie, Avery and Skylar, gave him everyday.
