James Newell Obituary

James R. Newell, age  81, of Penn Township, passed away on Thursday, February 29, 2024. Jim is survived by his beloved wife Gini; children, Christine Dalena and Ryan (Michelle) Newell; grandchildren, Haley, Mason, and Brady; brother, Thomas (Rita) Newell; and nephews, Matthew and Michael. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Garnet Newell.

Jim, known as Knute during his time at Scottdale High School, graduated in 1961 as a distinguished athlete, excelling in football, basketball and track, earning multiple varsity letters. He perused his academic journey by obtaining a BS in Special Education from California State College in 1965, followed by an M. Ed in Special Education/Psychology from Pennsylvania State University in 1971. Furthering his expertise, he acquired a certificate in School Psychology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, along with certifications as Supervisor of Special Education, Elementary Principal, and Secondary Principal from West Virginia University.

Early in his career, Jim served as Classroom Teacher for special education students at various schools in Western Pennsylvania. Later at Allegheny Psychological Associates, he worked as a Psychologist conducting psychoeducational evaluations on school-aged children. Jim concluded his professional journey at the Westmoreland Intermediate Unit, where he held roles as Supervisor of Special Education Classes and School Psychologist before retiring.

Jim found joy in sports, particularly college football and basketball, but his greatest delight came from watching his grandchildren participate in sports. He maintained an active lifestyle, consistently biking over a thousand miles each year. His preferred routes included Vanderbilt Beach in Naples, FL, the Three Rivers Heritage Trail in Pittsburgh, and the Westmoreland Yough Trail in West Newton, PA. Jim will be dearly missed by his family. he was never short on words and always had a story to share. He enjoyed his winters in Naples, FL, savored a well-made martini and cherished spending time with his family.

A memorial visitation will be held on Friday March 8, 2024, 2- 4pm & 6- 8 pm at Lindsay-Jobe Funeral Home, Inc., 3343 Route 130, Harrison City (724)-744-2721. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly ask to make a donation to the charity of your choice in Jim's memory.
