Allan Rathbone Obituary

Allan Monroe "Al" Rathbone, age 86 of Murrysville, PA passed away on December 29, 2020 at home with his loving wife by his side.
Allan was born on October 7, 1934 in Parkersburg, WV to the late William and Virginia (Smith) Rathbone.

Al grew up in a variety of locations due to his father’s work, including Aruba and New York state. He graduated Episcopal High School in Alexandria, VA and then enrolled at Lehigh University in 1952 on an ROTC scholarship. Al graduated Lehigh with a B.S. Chemical Engineering degree in June 1956 and was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the U.S. Army.

While relaxing with army buddies on a New Jersey beach in the summer of 1957, he met the love of his life, Yvonne Galetz. Al was honorably discharged from the Army after two years and enrolled in graduate school at Lehigh. He graduated in 1960 with a Master of Science degree in Metallurgy. Al and Yvonne were married in June 1960 and they moved to the Pittsburgh area. There, Al began a 36-year career with US Steel. Al rose from a research engineer to become Director of Research for the entire corporation. 

Al was an enthusiastic and skilled golfer and spent many Saturday mornings on the course. He was also an avid outdoorsman, enjoying fishing, hunting, and sporting clays. Al passed these passions on to his three sons and he spent much of his free time involved in activities with them. Al was also passionate about his yard and garden, particularly his roses and peonies. He served his community for over 20 years as a volunteer at the Forbes Regional Hospice Unit.

Al retired from US Steel in 1996 and began to travel with Yvonne, visiting family members throughout the country and spending winters in Gulf Shores, AL. 

Al was a devoted man of faith and attended St. Martin’s Anglican Church from 1962 until he passed. He served the church in many capacities including Senior Warden. Al had a passion for life, a wry sense of humor and a huge heart. He was devoted life-long to his church, wife and family, friends, and career.

He is survived by is his wife, Yvonne G. Rathbone; children, James Rathbone, Stephen (Lisa) Rathbone, and Matthew Rathbone; grandchildren, Rachel Petrofes, Michael Rathbone, and Kristen Rathbone. Allan was preceded in death by his parents, and by his brother, William V. Rathbone, Jr.

Friends will be received on Saturday, January 9, 2021, 10:00 am - 11:00 at the Bethel United Presbyterian Church, 418 Beatty Rd., Monroeville, PA 15146. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 11:00 am with Fr. Kua Apple Officiating. Masks and appropriate spacing will be required.
